Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

The Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is an educational framework designed to provide targeted interventions and support to students based on their individual needs. It encompasses various components, including Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Here is a summary of the MTSS process, along with discussions about RTI and PBIS:

MTSS Process

1. Universal Screening: The process begins with universal screening, where all students are assessed to identify those who may require additional support. This screening helps in early identification of students who may be at risk academically or behaviorally.

2. Tiered Interventions: MTSS employs a tiered approach, consisting of multiple levels of support. Tier 1 represents the universal level of instruction and support provided to all students. Tier 2 involves targeted interventions for students who require additional assistance beyond the universal level. Tier 3 is the intensive level of support provided to students who require more individualized and specialized interventions.

3. Data-Based Decision Making: MTSS relies on data to inform decision making. Student progress is continuously monitored through ongoing assessments and progress monitoring tools. This data helps educators identify students who may need additional interventions or adjustments to their support plans.

4. Intervention Implementation: Once students have been identified for additional support, targeted interventions are implemented based on their specific needs. These interventions may involve differentiated instruction, small-group interventions, individualized interventions, or specialized services provided by trained professionals.

5. Progress Monitoring: Regular progress monitoring is a crucial part of MTSS. Educators collect and analyze data to determine if the implemented interventions are effective. This allows for adjustments to be made to the intervention strategies based on the student's response to the support provided.

RTI (Response to Intervention)

RTI is a component of the MTSS process that focuses on addressing academic challenges. It involves a systematic approach to identifying and supporting students with learning difficulties. RTI typically consists of three tiers. Tier 1 includes high-quality, evidence-based instruction provided to all students. Tier 2 involves targeted interventions for students who require additional support. Tier 3 offers intensive, individualized interventions for students who continue to struggle despite previous interventions.

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports)

PBIS is another component of MTSS that focuses on addressing behavioral challenges. It emphasizes the creation of a positive school climate and proactive strategies to promote desired behaviors. PBIS involves defining and teaching positive behaviors, acknowledging and reinforcing appropriate behaviors, and implementing strategies to address challenging behaviors. It operates within a three-tiered framework, similar to RTI, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.

In summary, the MTSS process is an educational framework that supports students through a tiered approach. It incorporates RTI to address academic needs and PBIS to address behavioral needs. The process involves universal screening, data-based decision making, intervention implementation, and progress monitoring to ensure students receive appropriate and individualized support.
