Nominations are often made by classroom teachers; however, any responsible person who has knowledge of a student's intellectual functioning may nominate that student for further consideration. Additionally, an automatic referral procedure is described in SBOE Rule 160-4-2-.38. Each local board of education must establish a score on system-wide norm-referenced test results as the automatic referral level. Students scoring at or above this level are automatically considered.
Referrals can be made at any time during the school year.

Gifted Referral & Evaluation

Step 1: Nomination The student is nominated for gifted screening. Data is collected.

Step 2: Eligibility Team Review The eligibility team makes the decision to collect more information or to refer or not to refer the student for formal evaluation.

Step 3: Refer for Evaluation Parental consent is obtained before testing.

Step 4: Formal Evaluation Data is collected in four areas: mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation.

Step 5: Eligibility Team Assessment The gifted eligibility team members review all of the test data. Parents are notified of the testing results.

Step 6: Gifted Eligibility Service options are recommended.
