EXCEL Gifted Program: At A Glance

Who: Students, grades kindergarten through eighth, who demonstrate advanced motivation and a high degree of intellectual, academic and creative abilities. They are provided with special instructional services by the Program for Gifted Students.

What: Elementary Level (K-6):  Gifted services are provided through resource classes, cluster grouping, and/or the advanced content model of instruction.
          Middle / High Levels (7-12): Gifted services are provided through the advanced content model of instruction.

Where: Gifted services are available in grades K-8 at all elementary schools and middle schools in the Murray County School System.

When: Nominations are often made by classroom teachers. However, any responsible person who has knowledge of a student's intellectual functioning may nominate that student for further consideration. Referrals can be made at any time during the school year.

Eligibility criteria for placement in this program are determined by the State Board of Education as outlined in State Rule 160-4-2-.38 Education Program for Gifted Students. Under this eligibility rule, students are evaluated in the areas of mental ability, achievement, creativity and motivation. A variety of assessment instruments is used to measure this data. To qualify for gifted program placement. Students must meet the eligibility criteria in at least three of the four data categories or post qualifying scores in both mental ability and achievement

Why: Gifted services are mandated by the State of Georgia.

How Much Time: Gifted students are expected to receive a minimum of five segments of gifted level instruction per week.
